Ms. Pacheco was one of six volunteer lawyers receiving an award from the staff ofTexasBarCLE, the Bar's division for providing continuing legal education and one of the premier providers in the nation. The award, an attractive cobalt blue obelisk, is inscribed with "A Standing Ovation - Staff Appreciation for an Outstanding Volunteer of 2011." It also bears Ms. Pacheco's name, the logo for TexasBarCLE, and the seal of the State Bar of Texas. Patrick Nester, Director ofTexasBarCLE, explained the significance of the award. "All of our volunteers deserve our gratitude for contributing to the continuing education of their peers. Nevertheless, some stand out each year for extraordinaty dedication and commitment. The stafflooks forward to singling out individuals that not only gave enormously to our effotts, but also were gracious, easy to work with, and - oftentimes- helped us out in a real pinch." Since 1998 Ms. Pacheco has been an active force in the estate planning area of continuing legal education, patticipating in every estate planning course TexasBarCLE has presented, as well as some webcasts. A course director for many such courses, she is regarded by the staff as an excellent leader, exceedingly generous with her time and ideas, and a pleasure to work with. A consummate author and presenter, her speeches always generate positive evaluations from course attendees. "Without volunteers," Nester continued, "CLE from the State Bar couldn't be nearly as high quality, as abundant, or as affordable. Attorney volunteers are the reason TexasBarCLE can claim the slogan, 'Education by the Bar, for the Bar.' Lawyers must earn 15 hours of continuing legal education each year in order to maintain a license to practice law in Texas.

The family of James E. Hudson, Jr., with the support of the law firm of Crain, Caton & James, P.C. (CCJ) made a generous donation to the Star of Hope Mission following a successful clothing drive from the family and among law firm employees. According to James Hudson III, one of the children of James E. Hudson, Jr. and a member of Crain, Caton & James, P.C., over 28 boxes were collected, consisting of men, women, and childrens' apparel, shoes, and household items. "We are excited to provide this support to the Star of Hope Mission. It was very important to our family to combine the donation of our father’s clothing with the efforts of CCJ to assist the Star of Hope in providing hope and strength to those in need. This donation was inspired by our father, and by his love and respect for his grandfather, Ward Henry Farrington. When Ward Farrington, a former Houston city councilman, civic leader and businessman, died in 1962 he directed all his clothing, save his tuxedo in which he was buried, to be donated to the Star of Hope, a directive covered by the Houston Chronicle. After the passing last year of our father, a similar donation seemed appropriate. We were fortunate that CCJ supported and added to the donation," stated Mr. Hudson. Tom Ivey, Director of Administration for Crain, Caton & James, added “Crain Caton is delighted to be able to participate in a clothing drive for the Star of Hope Mission. The needs are great and our participation allows us to give back to the Houston community where Crain Caton has been in business since 1912, nearly 100 years.” The Star of Hope’s Marilyn Fountain, on hand for the donation, noted “Every day, Star of Hope is caring for 1100 men, women and children who have fallen through the cracks of mainstream living and are in desperate need of help. Meeting so many needs would be an impossibility, if we had to do it alone. We are very grateful for the generosity of the Hudson family and all the employees of Crain, Canton and James for their gift of kindness, clothing and food. It’s amazing how just reaching out in basic ways and filling the void that homelessness creates eases the pain.” About Crain, Caton & James, P.C. S This year's Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Houston Half Marathon, which were held in mid-January, sold out faster than ever last July, verifying their status as among the country's most popular road races. The 10,000 Half-Marathon slots disappeared in 19 hours, and the 10,000 Marathon entries in two-and-a-half days. Houston is also the race where Ryan Hall ran his famous American record, 59:34, three years ago. That was the race that catapulted Hall onto the American and world scene. Now the Houston races have surged ahead to an even more prominent position. On Monday, it was announced that Houston would be holding both the USA Men's and Women's Olympic Marathon Trials on January 14, 2012. That will be the first time both Trials have taken place in the same city on the same day. Yesterday, Amby Burfoot talked with Brant Kotch, president of the Houston Marathon Committee and race director of the Marathon and Half-Marathon. Mr. Kotch specializes in representation of real estate, banking and financial services, energy and other business clients in business formation (corporation, LLC, LLP and partnership), mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, exchanges, joint ventures, strategic alliances, debt and equity financing and restructuring and other transactions.
